چکیده

We have determined the luminosity function of 250 μm-selected galaxies detected in the ∼14 deg science demonstration region of the HerschelATLAS project out to a redshift of z = 0.5. Our findings very clearly show that the luminosity function evolves steadily out to this redshift. By selecting a sub-group of sources within a fixed luminosity interval where incompleteness effects are minimal, we have measured a smooth increase in the comoving 250 μm luminosity density out to z = 0.2 where it is 3.6 −0.9 times higher than the local value.

Astronomy & Astrophysics Herschel : the first science highlights Special feature L etter to the E ditor

The origin and possible universality of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is a major issue in astrophysics. One of the main objectives of the Herschel Gould Belt Survey is to clarify the link between the prestellar core mass function (CMF) and the IMF. We present and discuss the core mass function derived from Herschel data for the large population of prestellar cores discovered with SPIR...

Herschel : the first science highlights Special feature L etter to the E ditor Dust temperature tracing the ISRF intensity in the Galaxy ,

New observations with Herschel allow accurate measurement of the equilibrium temperature of large dust grains heated by the interstellar radiation field (ISRF), which is critical in deriving dust column density and masses. We present temperature maps derived from the Herschel SPIRE and PACS data in two fields along the Galactic plane, obtained as part of the Hi-GAL survey during the Herschel sc...
